Program Information

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program is unique among Fulbright Scholar Program initiatives because it is specifically designed to assist U.S. institutions of higher education to internationalize their campuses, especially those underrepresented in the larger Fulbright Program, or that have limited on-campus international opportunities. Institutions with a developed international program can also participate in the S-I-R program by demonstrating how the proposed Scholar will significantly enhance or expand existing international programs, serve students, and benefit the surrounding community. The Scholar-in-Residence often works across departments and curricula, ranging from teaching undergraduate courses, to advising on curriculum and faculty development, to engaging in across-campus activities. The institution benefits from the expertise provided, and the Scholar attains experience in U.S. higher education.

The S-I-R Program promotes cultural and intellectual diversity throughout the institution and with the wider community outside campus. The host community, through the institution, provides the visiting scholar with opportunities to participate in speaking engagements, community meetings, and other grassroots activities. Through this program, the institution can diversify the experiences of – and build international understanding among – campus and community members. The participating scholars in turn experience a wide range of educational contexts and immerse themselves in diverse communities across the United States.

Individual Scholar Information

Institutions applying to host through the S-I-R program have the opportunity to either name a specific scholar or to request recruitment of a scholar from a specified country (or countries) to participate in the proposed program. Naming a scholar is not required and does not affect the proposal selection. IIE works with Department of State partner organizations--Fulbright Commissions and U.S. Embassies--abroad to recruit scholars for institutions that request assistance with recruitment.
